Contemporary town garden design in Harpenden

Garden before construction

The developer of this newly built town house, had left it with less than sympathetic landscaping. Little soil sat on top of potting clay, the planting was uninteresting and the style old fashioned. The owners wanted the garden to reflect their contemporary tastes and be a haven for birds, bees, butterflies and themselves.

An existing patio was in shade most of the day, yet a sunny spot was required for entertaining. The solution was to build a new patio further out in the garden.

Sketch of design proposal

Strong, oak arches to hold scented climbers, and curved raised beds were created around it. Pleached trees screen the view of the neighbours and wildlife-friendly planting completes the picture.

The house’s modern interior was reflected in the styling of the outside space, in the furniture, stainless steel sculpture and bespoke water feature.

"The garden is even more lovely than we had hoped. We spend as much time in it as we possibly can."
